Protestors gather outside Trahan’s office in opposition of new AI bill

A group of students, activists and community members protested outside Rep. Lori Trahan’s Lowell office on Aug. 20, opposing her bipartisan FRONTIER Act and its provision preventing states from creating their own AI safety laws. Organized by QuitGPT and several Massachusetts advocacy groups, the protesters said they brought more than 5,000 petitions opposing federal preemption and argued that states should be able to establish their own AI regulations. Speakers also criticized major AI companies and raised concerns about the environmental and community impacts of data centers, including Lowell’s large AI data center. Trahan has defended the FRONTIER Act as a way to establish a uniform national standard for AI transparency, independent audits, risk management and reporting while addressing potential risks from increasingly powerful AI systems.
